THE local police officers, who go to serve on various international assignments, should always remind themselves that they are ambassadors of this country.
Commissioner General of Police, Godwin Matanga, said this at the briefing and debriefing of returning and outgoing contingents for United Nations Peacekeeping missions.
“As we gather to bid farewell to two officers, who are destined to undertake peacekeeping duties in the Abyei Administrative Area, we also take pride in warmly welcoming home five others who completed their tour of duty in South Sudan.
“To the outgoing contingent, the pace has already been set by your colleagues deployed before you.
“Take up the baton and scale up the frontiers of excellence that has become the hallmark of the organisation.
“To this end, never for a moment should you lose sight of the fact that we have sent you to the Abyei Administrative Area to be ambassadors of the organisation and indeed of our nation, Zimbabwe.
“It is my conviction that you will perform to the best of your ability and in so doing, do the organisation and nation, proud.”
He added:
“Indeed, today’s event bears testimony to the indelible the footprints that Zimbabwe Republic Police continues to leave on the international peace-keeping arena.
“Over the years, the organisation’s contribution and performance profile in peacekeeping missions has imprinted a consistent, traceable and broadly acknowledged success story.
“I would like therefore to express profound gratitude and appreciation to the returning contingent, for the hard work and high level of discipline exhibited.”
He said, to date, a good number of police officers have earned accolades and medals on international assignments.
“The fact that five of their counterparts had their tour of duty extended by another six months is a ringing endorsement of this contingent’s professionalism and dedication to duty.
“This, indeed, is a standing testament to the character of the organisation through our police officers over the years.
“I commend your commitment, courage and tenacity, a true embodiment of policing excellence and a real demonstration of our African values of Unhu/Ubuntu/Botho, including the abhorrence of conflict in pursuit of peace,” he said.
