BEAST FROM THE EAST. . . MSD raises red flag

THE Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a warning that Cyclone Freddy could hit south-western parts of Zimbabwe today.

Districts to be affected include Chipinge, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Beitbridge, Chivhu, Masvingo Rural, Zaka and Bikita.

In a statement, the MSD said the cyclone was characterised by heavy rains and strong winds.

“It’s expected to hit south of Manicaland, Masvingo and Matabeleland from Thursday evening to Sunday 26 February.

“It is characterised by very localised heavy rains and flash flooding in areas with saturated soils, wetlands, impervious grounds and along river basins.

“The public should watch out for blown off rooftops and fallen trees due to strong winds, and open drains and pot holes that may be covered by water.

“Rain may affect outdoor activities and people are advised to stay indoors.

“The public is urged to plan with the weather in mind.”

The statement added:

“If travel is necessary, please take caution on the roads as visibility may be reduced and there may be flood dangers

“Do not attempt to cross flooded rivers on foot or in vehicles.

“Updates of the impact and refined areas to be affected would be availed through the MSD platforms.”
