last couple of days. The days are no longer predictable as one moment it is dry and hot, before you know it, it’s chilly and pouring.

If you dig deep into your geography lessons you will see it is due to the oscillations of weather bands in our rainy season, unlike the more predicatble weather of winter and summer.

Heavy rains have hit most parts of the country lately and while we agree that the current atmospheric conditions are not conducive for learning — it has to be done. Yes, you have to go all the way to school in the pouring rain. Whether being driven by parents, commuting or walking all the way, you are supposed to engage the schooling gear as soon as learning commences. Not fair? Well, tell it to the mountains – tough love guys.

As Cool Lifestyle, the last thing we would like to do is be hard on you guys but since we have so much love for you, we have some ways to flip up the “bluh” days to make them pleasant.
You will find yourself gracefully gliding your way through school lectures this rain season.

Before we rush into complaining about the rains, let us remember that our country is agro based and therefore good rains translate to bumper harvests for our farmers and stability to our economy. It is not only that but our rich savanna climate brings forth beautified blossomed flowers and green vegetation this time of the year.

Cool Lifestyle spoke to a number of teens from Harare who gave us their mixed feelings about learning in the rain.

Ayanda Sithole (14) complained about how the rains dampen her learning spirit.
“I hate walking to school in the morning when it raining especially these days because the rains have been heavy and violent. You can get soaked even though you have your umbrella with you. Learning becomes difficult because you will not feel comfortable,” she posted on our Facebook page
A lot of teens are faced with the same predicament like Ayanda, where you have to go to school in the pouring rain. As much as it is a bore to do so at times, there are other dangers to be wary of as rains bring health risks like coughs, common colds and other water borne diseases. The best way to kick the chills, however, is to stay ahead of your game.

Always remember to keep your most efficient rain gear at all times. Raincoats may not be a favourite with many but if it is hooded, students can double the protection with an umbrella to avoid awkward moments when the rains become violent.

This way there is guarantee that you and your school books are safe and dry by the time you get into class. If it is pouring by the time you leave the house, be sure to carry with you a hot beverage that you may have to warm yourself up before lessons begin. It is also advisable to carry warm sweater or blazer so that the chilly whether does not keep you shivering throughout classes. Just remember not to overdo it because the sun might start blazing any moment!

The rains can only pose problems to you if you are not prepared for them.
Even when school periods are over, the rains should not bring you down. There are plenty of things to do indoors that may help towards your studies.

Kayla Chikuni (18), an Upper Six student, shared how she maximises when she is stuck indoors at home.

“I allay the boredom by taking the time to catch up on some reading. Since I have time to do nothing but relax, I not only read my notes but helpful novels and text books. Snacking while I cuddle on the book makes it more exciting because in no time you get hooked on it,” she said.
