The Health Professions Authority of Zimbabwe (HPA) has issued a stern warning against the growing trend of beauty and wellness facilities offering medical procedures without proper licencing and oversight.

In a statement, the HPA expressed grave concern over reports of non-medical professionals administering intravenous drips, injections and other invasive aesthetic treatments.

The authority stressed that such practices are in direct violation of the Health Professions Act, which explicitly prohibits unregistered personnel from performing acts reserved for registered health professionals.

“Mandated to safeguard the public, HPA urges the public to seek medical advice and treatment only from registered health professionals and institutions,” the statement read.

The authority advised consumers to verify the credentials of any practitioner by checking for a valid practicing certificate and HPA license.

According to the statement, the crackdown on unlicensed aesthetic procedures has already begun, with the HPA working jointly with the police to shut down facilities where unqualified personnel are carrying out medical treatments. The responsible individuals will face the full force of the law.

This development comes amidst growing concerns over the proliferation of beauty and wellness centres offering invasive procedures without proper medical oversight. Health experts have repeatedly cautioned about the risks of such practices, which can have serious implications for patient safety and public health.

The HPA’s firm stance underscores its commitment to upholding professional standards and protecting Zimbabwean consumers from potential harm.

The authority has urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities in order to maintain the integrity of the country’s healthcare system.
