Speaking at PSG’s training camp in Qatar, Leonardo said: “It’s a shame. David wanted very much to come to Paris, but the well-being of his family in Los Angeles and the desire not to change everything in his life outweighed that.
“It is not the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti (as manager) that has changed everything.”
Beckham joined LA Galaxy in 2007 and in November won the MLS Cup. His contract expires on December 31.
His wife Victoria has set up a successful fashion label in California and was reportedly reluctant to return to Europe.
Beckham is looking to prove his form and fitness ahead of the London Olympics, at which he hopes to be one of three over-23 players in the Great Britain side.
PSG have embarked on a major spending spree since the Qatar Investment Authority took control of the club last year, signing big-money players including Javier Pastore, Kevin Gameiro, Blaise Matuidi, Mohamed Sissoko and Jeremy Menez.
The club had been accused of trying to sign Beckham for marketing rather than sporting reasons, attracting criticism from the Green Party’s presidential candidate Eva Joly who said: “He’s only here to sell T-shirts.” — Eurosport.
