YOUNG people should become cultural and innovation ambassadors and assist in advancing relations with China, a Government official has said.

This year, 2026, has been designated as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchange, after leaders, including President Mnangagwa, agreed to the initiative at the Focac Summit in Beijing in 2024.

Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Emily Jesaya said Zimbabwe can leverage the power of intangible cultural heritage, such as Jerusarema Mbende dance and heritage sites, to boost tourism.

Dep Minister Jesaya made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Zimpapers recently.

“Young people are the torchbearers of cultural diplomacy and innovation. They can actively participate in cultural exchange programs, learn foreign languages, and promote Zimbabwean culture abroad through social media, arts, and educational initiatives,” she said.

“Initiatives such as youth-led cultural festivals, exchange visits, and collaborations in technology and education can strengthen ties.

“As we approach half a century of diplomatic relations with China, empowering youth to become ambassadors of their culture and fostering mutual understanding will ensure enduring and vibrant relations between Zimbabwe and China, rooted in shared respect and collaboration.”

Dep Min Jesaya added that the Global Civilisation Initiative promotes mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation among diverse cultures, fostering peaceful coexistence and shared progress.

“For Zimbabwe, this is vital as it offers an opportunity to deepen cultural ties, exchange knowledge, and collaborate on educational and developmental projects,” she said.

“Embracing this initiative can help Zimbabwe showcase its rich cultural heritage globally while also benefiting from China’s vast experience in cultural diplomacy, innovation, and development.

“It encourages us to build bridges beyond economic relations, fostering a more holistic partnership based on cultural appreciation and learning.”

She went on to say cultural exchanges are vital as they can be pillars that ca anchor tourism industry promotion.

She also highlighted the Jerusarema Mbende dance as a powerful symbol of Zimbabwean cultural identity with UNESCO recognition.

“It offers a unique platform for cultural exchange programs, performances, and workshops with communities like Murehwa, known for their rich cultural traditions,” she said.

“These exchanges can promote tourism, foster cultural pride, and enhance understanding between Zimbabweans and international visitors or partners.

“Collaborations can also include training in traditional arts, storytelling, and dance, helping to preserve and promote our cultural heritage while opening avenues for international recognition and cooperation.”

She further noted that heritage sites serve as invaluable assets for education and tourism, providing tangible links to Zimbabwe’s history and culture.

Dep Min Jesaya added that by developing these sites into well-maintained tourist destinations and educational centres, Zimbabwe can attract both local and international visitors.

“This creates opportunities for cultural exchanges, student visits, and academic research. Additionally, involving local communities in the preservation and promotion of these sites ensures sustainable tourism that benefits residents economically and culturally.”

She added that such initiatives can also foster partnerships with international cultural organisations, promoting Zimbabwe’s rich history on the global stage.
