Beekeeping workshop on the cards

THE Young Farmers’ Association of Zimbabwe (YFAZ) is set to host a beekeeping workshop meant to educate upcoming farmers on honey production.

The organisation, which is affiliated to the Zimbabwe Commercial Farmer’s Union, seeks to empower and develop upcoming farmers in the country.

The beekeeping workshop will be held in Bulawayo on February 28.

YFAZ chairman Ayanda Ndlovu said the beekeeping workshop was meant to impart knowledge on how to produce honey.

“We’ll have a pilot apiculture beekeeping programme with board members who would then teach other members,” he said.

Ndlovu said his association had many projects outlined for young farmers this year.

“We’ve a lot of programmes for our members this year. We’ll have a mushroom production showcase, poultry production, cattle and goat rearing, livestock vaccination and general animal husbandry, cattle pen fattening workshop and game farming workshops,” he said.

Ndlovu said since the launch of the association in December last year, their membership base had increased from 10 to 23.

“We now have a membership of 23 farmers and we’re receiving inquiries from farmers interested in joining us,” he said.

The association provides and facilitates provision of technical extension, administrative support and advisory services to members through workshops.

It seeks to keep farmers educated on new farming methods possibly source markets for their products by undertaking appropriate agricultural research programmes.

The association also negotiations for a conducive agricultural environment in terms of policies, discounts and subsidies on behalf of young farmers.
