“The Greatest honour history can bestow is that of peacemaker.”
Mahlubundile Mtukela from Fort Rixon in Matabeleland South province may be thinking that former US President, Richard Nixon, was drunk when he uttered this misleading statement.
He was thrashed within an inch of his life when he tried to play peacemaker in a fight between villagers at a beer drink.
Mthokozisi Mntambo (25) beat up Mtukela with a spring and a stick all over the body as punishment for refraining him from beating up his rival.
Mntambo appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Themba Chimiso facing a charge of assault.
He pleaded not guilty but was convicted and remanded in custody for sentencing.
The magistrate found the testimonies of the four State witnesses compelling, indicating the accused committed assault.
“The State called four witnesses and only one of the witnesses told the court that he did not see the alleged assault. However, the other three witnesses gave consistent statements and the medical report also proves that this was an assault,” said Chimiso.
The court heard that on 18 April 2023 at around 8pm, Mtukela was drinking with his siblings Kwanisile Mtukela, Mzikhona Mtukela and Patrick Zondo at Mqolweni Business Centre.
A misunderstanding arose between Mntambo and Zondo and they started fighting. Mtukela came in to refrain Mntambo from assaulting Zondo.
This angered Mntambo who turned on Mtukela and made him see stars with hefty blows using a spring and a stick on the head.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Mntambo.
The victim was referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals for medical attention.
