YOUNG female boxers in the country will be allowed to put their skills to the test at the upcoming Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) national tournament in Victoria Falls on Saturday.

Over 120 boxers from all the provinces are expected to descend on the resort city, in what has been described as the biggest tournament on the boxing calendar.

The bouts will be staged at the Victoria Falls Boxing gymnasium in the Chinotimba suburb.
ZBF technical director Steven Masiyambumbi told Zimpapers Sports Hub of their intention to promote female boxers in the country.

“We have a policy that seeks to promote as many female boxers to participate in such big tournaments.

As ZBF, it is our mandate to make sure that lady boxers get the attention and support they need. I call upon all dedicated females in the sport to register for the national tournament that will be held in Victoria Falls this weekend,” said Masiyambumbi.

Some female boxers to look out for at the Victoria Falls tourney include Lobengula Boxing Club’s Sehliselwe Nhliziyo who has been active in the ring, fighting in local tournaments and South Africa.

Earlier this week, Masiyambumbi revealed that they were going to use the tournament to select 13 male and 12 female boxers who will represent the country at the Mandela Boxing Cup in Durban, South Africa in April.

Pushed by the need to expose talented female boxers, Victoria Falls Boxing Academy’s director and coach Tobias Mupfuti said they had started a programme of training girls interested in the sport.

“The Academy’s efforts in promoting gender equality and inclusion have been commendable. By encouraging young girls to participate in the sport, the academy is challenging stereotypes and empowering the girls to pursue their dreams,” he said. — @NkosieLegend
