The trial of two Beitbridge-based customs clearing agents, Lloyd Mawadze (36) and Lauren Mawadze (32), who were recently arrested for allegedly defrauding vehicle importers of nearly US$20,000, has been postponed to 18 February.
The duo appeared before Beitbridge magistrate Mr Takudzwa Gwazemba, facing charges of fraud and theft of trust property. Their arrest followed a series of investigations after they went into hiding.
The accused, both customs clearing agents, allegedly misused their positions to receive funds from unsuspecting vehicle importers, promising to facilitate the importation of cars from South Africa.
However, after receiving the money, they disappeared, leaving their victims stranded.
According to the prosecution, the pair is accused of defrauding at least four victims, amassing a total of R81,500, US$11,700, and Z$17.5 million between 2023 and 2024.
Prosecutor Mr Tawanda Chigavazira stated that, in August 2023, the accused allegedly swindled Tendai Tshuma out of US$600 and Z$17.5 million, claiming the money was for import duty on a Ford Ranger single cab. After receiving the funds, they vanished.
The court also heard that, on a second occasion, the duo allegedly defrauded Tendai Tobias Bonga of US$4,100, promising to process import duty for a Mercedes-Benz C180, but disappeared afterwards.
In January the following year, they allegedly conned Tinashe Kutsukutsa out of US$7,000, claiming they would use the money to purchase a vehicle and pay duty on his behalf.
A report was made to the police, leading to their arrest. The accused are being represented by Mr Muchiwande Sithole of Samp Mlaudzi and Partners.
