Beitbridge to supply treated water to Musina

Zimbabwe has approved amendments to an agreement with South Africa under which the town of Musina in South Africa will get treated water from Beitbridge.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere said this while briefing the media on the deliberations of Cabinet on Tuesday.

He said Cabinet had approved the amendment of the agreement on the supply of treated water from the Beitbridge Water Treatment Works in Zimbabwe to Musina town across the Limpopo River in South Africa.

“Transfer of the treated water will be at agreed terms and conditions and the agreement provides a framework for any such arrangements amongst the designated competent authorities,” he said.

Benefits of the agreement include improved water resources co-operation and governance and improved livelihoods for the people of Zimbabwe due to the generation of much-needed foreign currency.

It will also result in strengthening relations and cooperation with South Africa as well as prevention of harm in the two riparian States through joint efforts in the management of water resources of the Limpopo watercourse.

Other benefits will be the improved management of water treatment, water supply and sanitation systems in Beitbridge Town due to foreign currency income as well as equitable and reasonable utilization of transboundary water resources. – New Ziana
