Believers witness God’s unbounded power

“HE took the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to his disciples to serve the people and he divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces and fish that were left over, twelve baskets full. Now there were 5 000 men who ate the bread.” — Mark 6:41-44

This month, I am excited to be discussing God as our provider — “Jehovah Jireh”.

Last week, I talked about God’s willingness to provide us with not just better things, but the best.

One of the most powerful and awe-inspiring miracles performed by Jesus Christ was the feeding of 5 000 people with just two fish and five loaves of bread.

This miraculous event not only demonstrates the compassion and generosity of our Lord, but it also serves as a lesson about the extraordinary work that God can perform in our lives.

Imagine the scene: a vast crowd of hungry people, far from any town, gathered to listen to Jesus’ teachings.

The disciples, feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of the situation, expressed doubt about the possibility of feeding such a multitude with so little.

Yet Jesus took the meagre offering of two fish and five loaves, blessed it and miraculously multiplied the food to abundantly satisfy the hunger of the entire crowd.

This miracle illustrates the incredible power of God to transform scarcity into abundance, to do the impossible and to exceed our expectations beyond measure.

In our own lives, we often face situations that seem insurmountable, challenges that appear too much to overcome and dreams that look as though they are beyond our reach.

However, the parable of the feeding of 5 000 people reminds us that, with faith and belief in the extraordinary works of God, even the most daunting tasks can be accomplished.

It teaches us that when we offer our meagre resources, skills and abilities to God, He can multiply them beyond our imagination.

Just as the small offering of fish and loaves became a bountiful feast, our humble efforts in the hands of God can lead to miraculous outcomes.

This story also emphasises the importance of trusting in God’s providence and believing in His ability to work wonders in our lives.

When the disciples doubted, Jesus demonstrated that through faith, all things are possible.

Similarly, in our own lives, we are called to have unwavering faith in God’s power to provide, to heal and to transform.

By trusting in His extraordinary works, we open ourselves to the limitless possibilities that He can bring into our lives.

So, let us take to heart the lesson of the feeding of the 5 000 people with two fish and five loaves. Believe in the extraordinary works that God can do, knowing that He is capable of transforming our lives, doing the impossible and exceeding our expectations beyond measure.   May we offer our meagre offerings to Him with faith, for in His hands, they can become sources of abundance, blessings and miracles. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit continue to provide for us.

Amen.
