BENEATH The Surface series is set to unpack the setbacks associated with marriages and relationships in a bid to address a growing trend that has taken love life hostage.
The series features Bulawayo’s Greatjoy Hlatshwayo and Amanda Mubaiwa as lead characters. Produced by Belinda Musemburi, Tatenda Katsande is the director, Tatenda Smangalisa (assistant director), Paul Zibgowa (director of photography and editor), Amen Ngwenya (sound) and Doloz Jonato (cameraman).
The series recently premiered at Theatre in the Park and now eyes to be at the centre of a number of the country’s top TV stations.
Musemburi said the series is filled with a more realistic portrayal of what many relationships have turned into.
“Beneath the Surface is a powerful drama series that addresses various issues affecting marriage and relationships. One aspect I love about the series is its unpredictability, filled with numerous twists and turns; it is truly dynamic and breathtaking.
“I want to commend the cast and crew for their exceptional work. A special shoutout to our writer and director, Tatenda Katsande, and the talented director of photography, Paul Zibgowa. I cannot wait to see this masterpiece come to life. I’m also thrilled about the outstanding performances from our cast, especially Everjoy, blessing, talent Smangalisa Tanaka and Amanda Mubaiwa. This series is a must-watch,” said Musemburi.
Lead Actor Greatjoy Hlats, who plays the role of Dr Alfred Moyo, said it has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of his acting journey.
“This character is layered — he carries love, secrets, emotional battles, and the silent struggles many people are dealing with today.
Stepping into his shoes pushed me creatively and emotionally, helping me grow in ways I didn’t expect. It feels incredibly rewarding to bring such a relatable and human story to life.
“Working with Tatenda has been exceptional. He is a phenomenal storyteller — bold, meticulous, and deeply intuitive about human emotions. Being chosen by him for the lead role was a huge honour. His direction challenged me to understand my character beyond the script, to find the emotional truth behind every line and moment.
He brings out the best in his cast, and being guided by him was an opportunity I value immensely,” he said.
Greatjoy Hlatshwayo said working with Belinda was inspiring from start to finish.
“She is warm, understanding, and incredibly supportive — the kind of producer who makes the set feel like a home. Belinda created an environment where creativity could flow freely. She ensured that everyone felt valued, heard, and comfortable. Her professionalism and her ability to balance structure with compassion made this project even more meaningful. I genuinely appreciate the way she welcomed me and trusted me with such a significant role.
“Beneath the Surface reflects the realities of modern life in the 21st century — love, identity, emotional wounds, healing, and the unspoken truths we often carry. This series dives into the hidden layers of human relationships, showing that people have stories beneath their smiles that the world rarely sees.
It blends romance, realism, and social issues, making it a powerful example of today’s creative storytelling. The narrative starts important conversations and resonates with viewers on a personal level,” said Greatjoy Hlatshwayo.
Mubaiwa said he is absolutely loving every moment of working on this film.
