FORMER Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari, has described the mood at his South African Absa Premier Soccer League team Bidvest Wits, as exuberant.Mwaruwari has not received much game time this season at the Johannesburg-based side though. The arrival of striker S’thembiso Ngcobo from AmaZulu has worsened his chances of commanding a regular place in the team which is coached by one of the most successful coaches in the PSL, Gavin Hunt.
The former Warriors marksman told Chronicle Sport: “As I talk everyone is overjoyed about our victory against tough league champions Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon (in the Nedbank Cup) where we managed to hold them to a 2-2 draw and won 3-2 on penalties.
“It was a difficult match but we knew what we wanted and our coach planned for the team very well and the players responded well to his tactics.”
Mwaruwari said that they capitalised on Chiefs’ weaknesses as they knew that they were chasing the league and Nedbank Cup at the same time which sometimes exhausts the players and kills the team’s rhythm.
Warriors’ defender Onismor Bhasera is the talk of the town after scoring the winning penalty which sent Amakhosi packing and Wits into stardom.
Mwaruwari urged his teammates not to be carried away by their recent victory over Amakhosi but to wait for the game against Soweto giants Orlando Pirates who beat Zimbabwean Terrence Mandaza’s Maritzburg United 2-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium in KwaZulu Natal on Saturday evening. Mandaza scored the solitary goal.
Tinashe Nengomasha was an unused substitute and Denver Mukamba was not on the Wits University bench even though he played a vital role in the midweek league game against Pirates when the teams shared the spoils in a goalless draw.
