PREPARATIONS for this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series are gathering momentum and organisers of this big international motocross competition have managed to secure a major title sponsor for the event.

The 2023 Zimbabwe Summer Series is the season-ending motocross event and it has been slated for December 6, 8 and 10 at Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare.

The annual event usually attracts top international dirt bike riders from the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Namibia and Zambia.

For this year’s competition, the Zimbabwe Summer Series will revert to its traditional format of three days spread over Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Last year’s event was squeezed over three consecutive days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday due to the Covid-19-induced restrictions.

But this year’s event will be back to its Wednesday, Friday and Sunday format at Donnybrook.

The first two days will open with two Supercross (night racing) meetings followed by a full day of motocross competition on Day Three of competition on Sunday, December 10.

And it all points out to a bigger and better competition after the organisers of the Zimbabwe Summer Series, the Bogwheelers Club, yesterday revealed that they have secured a major sponsor — Better Brands Jewellery — for this year’s event.

Speaking to Zimpapers Sports yesterday, one of the Zimbabwe Summer Series organisers, Doug Mellor, said Better Brands Jewellery, have come on board as their main title sponsors.

“Better Brands Jewellery are coming in as the main title sponsors of this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series.

“They have been with us since last year but for this year, they have decided to come in big time as the main title sponsors of this big international event and we just want to thank them for this wonderful gesture, “Mellor said.

Better Brands Jewellery are owned by prominent Harare businessman, Scott Sakupwanya, whose two sons, Mudiwa (10) and Judah (6), are into motocross.

They were lured into this exciting motorcycling sport by their father’s close friend, Brighton “Bucks” Bako, last year.

Bako’s son, Emmanuel (17), is already one of the country’s motocross champion riders.

Ironically, the Sakupwanya brothers, Mudiwa and Judah, made their international debut on the motocross track when they took part in last year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series which was held at the Donnybrook Park Raceway.

Meanwhile, Mellor said they are trying to bring in free style riders from South Africa to spice-up this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series.

“We are going to try bring in free style riders from South Africa for display on Fri-day night and Sunday.

“We just want this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series to be the most exciting event in the history of this big international motocross competition.

“We also hope to start rebuilding the tracks soon with help from Better Brands Jewellery,” Mellor said.
