BULAWAYO Handball Association (BHA) is set to hold its annual open season tournament at the United College of Education (UCE) on 21 February ahead of the commencement of the 2020 Southern Region Handball League.

Cephas Mushati, the spokesperson for the Southern Region Handball, said they were looking forward to a very competitive league and this time they were trying to start the league as early as possible.

“Last year there was a huge gap in our fixtures which we believe killed the momentum of the teams and players but this year we will try to make it a fortnight league which I believe will keep teams occupied and also upgrade our handball standard in the region.

“Our wish is to come up with fixtures for the whole season so that all teams that will be involved will be able to fulfil their fixtures throughout the year,” said Mushati.

Mushati said they had challenges with institutions and schools registered in the league but fail to fulfil their fixtures during holidays. He said they would try to have those teams play all their matches before they go for holidays.

“We are holding this open season tournament on the 21st to be able to identify clubs who will be participating in the local league and we are appealing to the clubs to register their clubs and players early to avoid disruption of the league,” said Mushati.

Besides the local league, Mushati said several tournaments would be held in between and they were requesting the corporate sector and well-wishers to assist in funding these activities.
