REGIS BHUNU (pictured) does not want to continue as Tennis Zimbabwe president and he made it clear ahead of the governing body’s AGM last weekend.
But the country’s six tennis provinces used the meeting to send a clear message to Bhunu: they refused to nominate a replacement, meaning they still want the man they elected three years ago to stay on for a second and final term in office.
Bhunu insisted he could not continue at the helm of Tennis Zimbabwe and is pushing for an emergency meeting to elect his successor.
“Before the AGM the provinces approached me and I told them I will not be standing for re-election. I don’t know what it meant to them because they did not put up names they want for presidency and that complicated matters.
“We need to call for an emergency special meeting and the provinces need to submit names of candidates they want to be considered for election,” he said.
But why is Bhunu seeking to walk away when he has such strong support?
“My commitments are so demanding so I can’t continue as president,” he explained. “It’s a lot of work leading Tennis Zimbabwe. I have been there, three years as vice-president, and three years as president; I know what it takes. If you have limited time, you should not take it.”
Bhunu did not rule out returning in future.
“Any other time, since I have not had my second term, I can always come back if I am still needed to continue,” he said.
As he prepares to walk away, Bhunu says he is a content man.
“It has been a lot of hard work, I am happy with what we did as an executive. We have held Futures Tournaments every year, three per year, you can see this facility (Harare Sports Club courts), it is progressive we have continued to improve it.
We have also continued to increase the number of international tournaments in the country,” he said.
