BIANCA Schultz is set to become the first female motor cyclist to compete with men for top honours in the Endurance Race at the Victoria Falls Road Circuit in Bulawayo tomorrow. It will be a family affair as she is set to race alongside her husband Tim and son Matt in the same competition.
BMC vice-chairman Zane Shah said Schultz’s participation would spice up the competition.
Shah said Schultz is a motor cyclist who has been in the sport for a while having taken part in competitions held in South Africa’s Midrand Kyalami Circuit.
She did bits as a marshal at Kyalami and also worked as a medic at race events.
Schultz has been a biker since last year and has competed in events from the beginning of the year.
Shah said Schultz would be riding a Yamaha 600cc which is sponsored by Matabeleland Engineering in Bulawayo.
Another family involved this year would be debutants father and son Byron and Dean Norman who are racing a turbo charged VW Golf expected to give the veterans a good run for their money.
Byron and Dean will also take part in the Three Hour Race.
Shah said that both endurance races are a test of skill and consistency for drivers and riders.
The Three Hour Endurance race is sponsored by Toyota and Castrol while the motorcyclists’ is bankrolled by Shah’s Colourworld.
The sprint races for cars and motorcycles are sponsored by Barons and Jonnesway.
BMC is expecting the biggest field ever of competitors on the grid with 38 drivers and 24 bikers having so far confirmed their entries.
Among the confirmed drivers are Darren Winterboer, the reigning champion, Ian Howden also a top spot favourite, three South Africans (John Amm, Eric Salamon, Rory Sharp) and one from Botswana Garth Chitrin.
Gate charges are pegged at $5 for everyone and free for BMC members and children under the age of 12. Also available is limited pit access at $15 for adults.
