Relationships are almost inevitable in the “Big Brother” house. Between shared spaces, long nights and constant cameras, “ships” (relationships) tend to form by week one, with some becoming fan favourites and others fizzling out as soon as the season ends.
While many of these connections struggle to survive outside the bubble of the house, a few do try to make it work in the real world. Juicy Jay (real name Siyamthanda Jwacu) and Yvonne Awanga were one of those couples who took their relationship beyond “Big Brother Titans”.
The former housemate finally spoke about what led to the end of his relationship with fellow contestant and ex-girlfriend, Awanga.
In a recent appearance on the “Engineer Your Life with Lungelo” podcast, Juicy Jay reflected on their time together after the show and admitted that the relationship began to feel one-sided.
He added that he held more of the relationship weight and was the only one who initiated meeting up since they were in a long-distance relationship, with Awanga residing in Nigeria and him in South Africa.
“I don’t think the failure of my relationship was based on the distance, but I’m sure it was a factor. I don’t blame it on that, never,” he said.
According to him, he was almost always the one starting conversations, calling and checking in, something that slowly weighed on him.
“There were other things that sort of crept in between. At some point, I started to feel like I’m being told something without being told that time is up,” he said.
Juicy Jay explained that while he could sense that Yvonne had emotionally checked out, it was never directly communicated to him. That lack of openness, he said, left him carrying the emotional load alone and trying to keep things alive without much reassurance in return.
He further revealed that Awanga gave him a two-year ultimatum to get his finances in order – IOL.
