FIVE suspects have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a mine in Mberengwa, where robbers allegedly attacked security personnel and stole three loaded shotguns and US$16 500 in cash.

The suspects are Trueman Joseph Kumo (50), Tinashe Rungano Chinodya (39), Calvinias Zhou (58), Polite Moyo (26) and Hamfry Mbosini Mpofu (25). They were arrested following the robbery, which occurred on October 30.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects were armed with two pistols, axes and shovels when they allegedly attacked the complainants and disarmed security personnel who were on duty.

“During the robbery, the suspects allegedly stole three shotgun rifles loaded with 18 rounds of ammunition and US$16 500 in cash,” he said.

Commissioner Nyathi said police investigations had led to the recovery of the stolen firearms and five spent cartridges.

“Police have since recovered five spent cartridges and the three stolen shotgun rifles from the suspects,” he said.

“The arrests and recovery of the firearms mark a significant development in investigations into the armed robbery.”

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
