THE Zimbabwe Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Association commemorated the World Refrigeration day yesterday in Chegutu.
The event was graced by representatives from the Environmental Management Association, Forestry Commission and Chegutu ZRP.
The association was established a decade ago and it has also been voluntarily repairing refrigerators at local hospitals and government institutes.
They have a branch in each of the country’s 10 provinces.
Munyaradzi Gandinwa, who is the Environment Officer for Chegutu, emphasised the significance of using refrigerators, which are ozone-friendly.
“It is a very significant day within the refrigeration community because it raises awareness to these technicians to know the impact of their trade.
“It’s important that these refrigerator technicians are no longer working in a haphazard manner, as they used to do, as we now have laws which regulate their operations.
“At least, these technicians will also get to know how their trade can affect the ozone layer and such an event helps us to highlight the importance of using refrigerators which are ozone-friendly,” said Gandinwa.
Zimbabwe Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Association president, Twine Phiri hailed refrigerator technicians for coming in numbers to celebrate their day.
He also stressed out the significance of refrigerators given the impact of climate change.
“I’m also grateful to the invited associations who made time for this event.
“Refrigerators are slowly emerging as a human need rather than what they used to be known and categorised as luxurious.
“It’s now difficult for people to survive without refrigerators and climate change has increased refrigerators’ demand as you can see that we are actually in a winter season but we cannot say we can survive without them,” said Phiri.
