Billiat goal puts Kaizer Chiefs on the brink of ending five-year championship drought

KHAMA Billiat eased the burden off his shoulders with a goal for Kaizer Chiefs that could potentially see Amakhosi being crowned champions come the end of the Absa Premiership on Saturday.

Khama Billiat celebrates goal

Billiat’s solitary first half strike, his second for the season ensured Kaizer Chiefs of the three points against Chippa United on Wednesday when they won 1-0 at Orlando Stadium.

The 30-year old Warriors star has been under immense pressure to deliver for the Glamour Boys and has come under heavy scrutiny since the resumption of the Absa Premiership last month for his failure to reproduce the same kind of display he put up while at Mamelodi Sundowns. Billiat scored the only goal of the game in the ninth minute after being put through by Serbian Samir Nurkovic.

While there was delight for Billiat, it was not the same for another Zimbabwean, Elvis Moyo, with the former FC Platinum defender sent off three minutes before the end for an uncalled-for dangerous tackle on Ramahlwe Mphahlele, which reduced the Chili Boys to nine man since Tercious Malepe had already been red carded.

Chiefs will now end their five-year wait for the title if they conquer Baroka on Saturday, provided Mamelodi Sundowns do not beat Black Leopards and overturn the goal difference enjoyed by Amakhosi.

The two teams are on both on 56 points with the title to be decided on the last day.

Masandawana turned on the heat with a 3-0 over George Chigova’s Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.

Chigova, wearing the captain’s armband for Rise and Shine picked up the ball from the nets three times after being beaten by Anele Ngcongca, Themba Zwane and substitute Keletso Makgalwa.

Things are not looking good for Chigova and his teammates with their side at the bottom of the log going into the final round of fixtures where they face Bidvest Wits.
