Bindura Municipality is exploring possible collaboration with Geo Pomona Waste Management as it works towards attaining city status, Town Clerk Evelyn Madziire has said.

Speaking to the media after being led on a tour of the waste management firm’s facility in Harare yesterday, Ms Madziire said partnering Geo Pomona would help the municipality achieve its set goals.

“We are a municipality, we are also aiming for city status, that’s why we are coming here, so that we emulate the best,” she said.

“We used to come here just on national events, when they were opening and commissioning vehicles, but when we got back home, we thought it was necessary to come back for a special visit and really tour the area, so that in future we can also come up with some strategic partnership with Geo Pomona.”

Ms Madziire said Bindura Municipality would also engage surrounding municipalities to ensure greater collaboration with Geo Pomona Waste Management.

“Considering the size of our city, maybe we will also invite some of our sister local authorities who are near us, so that it makes economic sense that maybe Geo Pomona could be able to partner with us, because what we see here is a massive project, a landmark project, which we never dreamed of, but here it is in our country, Zimbabwe.

“So we also want to emulate that because when we were touring, we could see that this is sustainable development, the environment is managed well, from water bodies to underground features, so our purpose of coming here was just to see for ourselves.”

Bindura has a managed dump site, which it hopes to develop into a landfill with Geo Pomona’s expertise.

“We have 21 hectares of land, which we are using, so we are using part of the land as a managed dump site, and then the other area, we would also wish to develop it finally into a landfill. That’s why we are coming here, to copy from the best,” she said.

Geo Pomona Waste Management’s chief executive officer and executive chairman, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, said several cities and municipalities continue to engage the firm seeking collaboration.

“With Kwekwe, we started negotiating, we are finalising our bid, our contract.

“I think by the end of this month, we will finish our negotiations with the City of Kwekwe. The other authorities are still deliberating, there are a lot of things that need to be discussed, but we are ready to partner with them,” he said.

On the state‑of‑the‑art restaurant currently under construction, Dr Nguwaya said it would be open to the public next month.

“The restaurant is now ready, very soon you will see people come here. I think in March we will start operating the restaurant.

“I hope you come here and enjoy,” he said.
