People in Nsungwale Village under Chief Sinakoma in Binga district are in need of more help following floods that killed one person and displaced 181 families last week.
In an interview yesterday, Acting Binga District Development Coordinator Mr Farai Marinyame said immediate food needs have been met for now but more general provisions are still required.
“Currently we are okay on the immediate food requirements but there is need for more provisions especially items such as clothing, sanitary wear, blankets and food,” he said.
Mr Marinyame said they are looking for long term solutions to ensure the safety of the flood victims.
He said they also want to ensure that the families are able to restart their lives.
“Part of our long-term solutions include the relocation of the flood victims to a new site. However, we are currently facing a challenge in acquiring fencing for that site and we are also in need of clean tap water and we are also facing an issue of lighting for the new relocation site,” he said.
Mr Marinyame said they are engaging Government and telecommunication companies to address the issue of lack of network services in the area.
“In terms of communication it is very difficult to coordinate with someone who is out of that range so we have already spoken with teams from NetOne and the Government to try and highlight all the issues we are currently facing and we are waiting for a response,” said Mr Marinyame.
He said key stakeholders have been mobilising resources to assist the affected families.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Zimbabwe donated specialised packages for the affected women and girls and they included sanitary wear, clothing and chlorine to purify water supplies. — @natashaadam1
