The popular mobile film teams, known as bioscopes in their heyday, are being revived by Government to fill the information gap between urban and rural communities.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, who was represented by her Deputy Kindness Paradza, relaunched the concept over the weekend at Kenzamba Primary School in Makonde Constituency, Mashonaland West.
Bioscopes were popular in the 1970s to 1990s, with the Information Ministry moving around the country showing movies and local dramas.
She said the reintroduction of the concept was in line with Government’s commitment to keep its citizens informed and entertained.
“We are relaunching the bioscope concept today in a move aimed at bridging information gaps particularly between rural and the urban communities. Most rural families have no access to television, radio and newspapers and as a Government, we have found it prudent to reintroduce the concept to keep our communities informed and entertained.”
The concept is expected to relay various developmental projects being spearheaded by the Second Republic, documentaries of the Second Chimurenga and celebrate local content creators.
“Our team from the content department, Production Services, will move around the country showing videos of Government developments and other information.”
The teams will record cultural practices from across the province which will be showcased to communities.
She reaffirmed Government’s obligation to continue opening radio and television airwaves as the Second Republic keeps its promises.
For Mrs Antonio Zvidzai from Westrange in the constituency, the relaunch ignited sweet memories of the bioscopes.
“This is commendable and welcomed by Makonde district. It will help promote development and educate the community as most of us don’t have access to televisions,” she said.
Mr Duncan Mutonga echoed same sentiments adding a lot of information on Second Republic’s developmental successes ought to be amplified.
The first day of the launch saw hundreds drawn from Makonde Constituency who had gathered at the school for the third WaMambo Sport Tournament launch, kept their eyes glued to the classroom wall, where various videos were beamed.
