SANDRA Ndebele came close to tears, when about 400 children sang a birthday song for her during her belated birthday party held at Amakhosi Cultural Centre on Saturday. When the children drawn from different children’s homes in Bulawayo sang the birthday song, Sandy, as Ndebele is affectionately known, could not hide her emotions.

The children were from, Emthunzini Wethemba, Khayelitsha SOS Children’s Home and orphans from Makokoba and Mzilikazi suburbs.

The birthday party was held at Amakhosi and featured Iyasa who provided entertainment.

In an interview on the sidelines of the party Sandy said she was delighted to spend time with children who are less priviledged.

She said she wanted them to enjoy the birthday party and have the goodies that they might not be used to as orphans.

“I enjoyed myself as you can see my face is painted. We wanted to give the children a memorable day and they did as they ate, drank and danced to music,” said Sandy.

She said each children’s home was going to receive a bale of clothing and 100kgs of mealie meal.

“My sponsors and I gave the five children’s homes each a bale of clothes and 100kgs of mealie meal. This is a small way to thank them for sharing this day with me,” said Sandy.

The representative of Innscor Africa in Matabeleland region, Itai Timburwa said their involvement with Sandy was the brainchild of their managing director, Warren Meares who felt their group needed to help the less fortunate.

“The managing director Warren Meares has a soft spot for the less privileged and when Sandy came with the proposal, we accepted it. It is our desire as Innscor to be more involved in the community and in the near future we shall introduce more of such programmes,” said Timburwa.

When it came to cutting the cake Sandy invited some of the children to help her.

Thereafter it was fun-filled afternoon as the children enjoyed their food and danced to music.
