UNKNOWN assailants on Sunday night petrol bombed a house belonging to Bishop Ngoni Mwazha at his farm in Kwekwe, destroying property worth more than US$150 000.
No injuries were reported in the attack, which occurred at around 11pm while the family was away.
Police confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway, with more details expected to be released in due course.
Bishop Mwazha is the son of the late African Apostolic Church leader Archbishop Paul Mwazha.
In an interview, Bishop Mwazha’s wife, Mrs Desiree Kwaramba-Mwazha, said the family had travelled to Harare on Saturday morning, leaving their daughter, Loveness Mwazha, at the main house, while a worker was staying in a nearby cottage.
She said their daughter was alerted to the attack by a loud noise late Sunday night.
“At around 11PM, she heard a loud noise from outside and the sound of a window being broken. At first she thought it was ordinary criminals, but moments later she saw a ball of fire inside the house,” said Mrs Mwazha.
Realising the danger, Loveness fled the house and alerted workers on the farm, who attempted to put out the fire but were unsuccessful.
A report was made to the police, who in turn summoned the Fire Brigade, but by the time help arrived, part of the 13-roomed house had already been reduced to ashes.
The family said the fire destroyed a wide range of property, including household goods, kitchen utensils, beds, blankets, bags of maize and beans, as well as other valuables.
Investigations into the attack are ongoing.
