Bishops in sex-abuse cover up

Cape Town — One of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious boys’ schools has been embroiled in a sex-abuse cover up scandal that goes back two decades. According to the Sunday Times, staff at Cape Town’s elite private boys school Diocesan College — or Bishops as it is known — this week confirmed two alleged incidents of sexual abuse. The first involved a former pupil who was allegedly sexually abused by a fellow pupil in 2012, while the second involved a teacher and a Grade 11 pupil in 1990.

The teacher accused of the abuse was however allowed to continue teaching at the school for another 20 years. He retired four years ago. The matter was apparently common knowledge among the school’s community for all those years.

However, Bishops reportedly distanced itself this week from both incidents and said it had put procedures in place to ensure that similar allegations in future would be thoroughly investigated. — AP
