BLABBERMOUTH: Who said child pledging is over?

THE Shona people had so many ways of executing marriage.

Kuzvarira, which can be translated to mean child pledging, is a process in which parents give their daughter away for marriage to a rich person, or a person who is wealthier than them are in exchange for cattle, food or any other valuables.

This form of marriage is instituted by a family under financial stress or economic deprivation.

When giving away their daughter to a wealthier family, it is a way of sacrificing an individual for better opportunities and relieving financial stress within the home.

In many cases, kuzvarira is seen as a last resort.

However, this form of roora was not done arbitrarily.

It was often met and negotiated with the two families.

Blabber could not help, but reminisce of this old concept after realising that we have many in our midst who are still practicing some of these old concepts.

If you think Blabber is lying, just check that other young woman who started a crèche from the proceeds of her relationship with this other well-known businessman.

All this happened with the blessings of her mother.

The businessman funded the opening of the crèche and today the mother and the child have spread their tentacles and moved on to add a private school to their business portfolio.

In fact, the mother is now running the business, given that the girl has since relocated to that other city where they never sleep.

For the benefit of those that may think that Yours Truly is blabbering about fictitious things, the private school is located in that other medium density suburb near the popular final resting place.

Dear reader, please note that the businessman is happily married and has a family of his own, even though he is known for pampering many of his girlfriends around the city.

For now, Blabber will leave it here.

Blabber is still putting together notes on this other juicy one involving a certain man who pretends to be socially upright by day, being a church elder from that other nearby gold mining area, and yet he is a sharp razor blade by night.

However, he is not the only one pretending to be a morally upright.

Blabber is also tying the loose ends on this other one involving a male married money changer who resides in one of our leafy suburbs and a married older woman who resides in that suburb that has something to do with water.

Just watch this space!
