POLICE in Manicaland have launched a manhunt for a 25-year-old Buhera man who allegedly set his cousin’s kitchen hut on fire after she refused to open the door for him.
The suspect, Takunda Mphofu Shara, is being sought in connection with an arson incident that occurred on Tuesday in Mawite Village under Chief Chimombe in Buhera. He has since been declared a fugitive.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.
According to police, the complainant, Alice Munjoma (44), was at her homestead with her five minor children when Shara arrived and allegedly proceeded directly to the family’s kitchen hut, where he demanded entry.
“Munjoma reportedly refused to open the door because she feared for her safety and that of her children,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Police allege that Shara repeatedly knocked on the door and threatened to set the structure ablaze if he was not allowed inside. When Munjoma remained in the hut, he allegedly carried out the threat by setting the building on fire before fleeing the scene.
Munjoma and her five children managed to escape unharmed moments before the flames engulfed the structure.
The family attempted to extinguish the fire, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The blaze destroyed household property worth approximately US$1 500, including a bed, six blankets and other household goods. However, Munjoma managed to salvage five bags of cement before the fire spread.
Police are appealing to members of the public who may have information on the whereabouts of Shara to report to the nearest police station or contact Dorowa Police Station.
Investigations are continuing.
