IN these hard times, the temptation to earn money through unscrupulous means is high, and men, women, girls and boys are doing everything to put money in their pockets.
Blabber understands that most of us are doing just enough to keep the wolf from the door and hardly earn enough to save or invest in business projects. But this is not an excuse for the ungodly acts we are seeing in our communities.
Only recently, we all read about a girl and her mother who hatched a plan to deceive an innocent and daft boy into paying roora when they knew fully well that the boy, like the biblical Moses, would only see Canaan, but would not enter.
Yours Truly was shocked to learn they are not the only ones.
In fact, in the same neighbourhood, on the same street to be precise, something similar occurred, but never received the same publicity as the case we now all know. This is just not fair!
Yours Truly will leave the roora heist cases for another day, because Blabber is more concerned about the unholy hunt for money by many youngsters flocking to a nearby gold mining area.
Word reaching Yours Truly is that many youths are consulting traditional healers and spiritualists for supernatural help to acquire riches through gold mining. Children and elderly relatives are dying mysteriously at homes after these youths obtain ritual paraphernalia, ostensibly to help them get gold easily and make money.
Only recently, we buried a child who had flu for a few hours. Within days, the father was making money from the treacherous pits of this gold mining area. This world is surely not our home!
Since time immemorial we have been taught about these useless ritualistic ways of making money and their negative aftermath, yet somehow we just do not listen.
Common symbolic wealth practices, include bay leaf manifestation, which involves writing a financial goal on a dried bay leaf and safely burning it to release the intention into the universe.
There is also the prosperity money bowl, whereby one places a small bowl filled with rice, herbs and coins in a living space to represent and invite an ongoing flow of abundance.
Then there is salt-water cleansing, when one washes home entryways or floors with salt water, which is folklorically believed to clear away negative energy blocking success. We also have diviner and shrine rites.
Local traditions sometimes feature rumours of people visiting traditional shrines or practitioners for special charms to find gold or sudden riches, which remain matters of folklore rather than working economic strategies. Then there is the wealth snake. Urban legends in various regional folklore, including here in Southern Africa, speak of mythical serpents or creatures rumoured to regurgitate cash.
Gentle reader, get this from Yours Truly, an elder in our community: this will not improve your life in any way. Instead, it will harm you and your loved ones. The end is sad. Very sad!

Strategic money management and spending control mean separating fixed essential costs from emotional or impulsive purchases to keep living expenses lower than income. Emergency buffer monitoring entails maintaining a cash reserve covering three to six months of basic living expenses to prevent financial setbacks from forcing you into debt. Calculated risk-taking is essential. Direct surplus funds into income-generating assets such as businesses, real estate, or diversified portfolios rather than letting cash sit idle.
