IT was a disastrous day for Zimbabwean players in the individual section of the Squash Federation of Africa Senior Championships being held in Bulawayo yesterday.
The Zimbabwean men won one match and lost three on the first day of the individuals’ event. On the women’s side, Zimbabwe lost all their matches with Yvonne Mubure losing due to injury.
Ryan Gwidzima kick started with a 3-0 triumph victory over Msindisi Sibanda from Botswana. Talent Jambo, however, was beaten 3-0 by Matthew Boote from South Africa.
Nishyto Munyoro lost 3-0 against Khaled Labib from Egypt and his teammate, Roy Jambo lost by the same score against Max Endjala from Namibia.
In the women side Nyarai Goba lost 3-0 against South Africa’s Lizelle Muller while Polite Mubure also suffered a same score line defeat at the hands of Nigeria’s Rofiat Abdulazeez. Natasha Gwidzima also lost her match 3-0 against Natasha Chimese from Zambia as all the Zimbabwean women lost their first round matches.
The defeat however is not the end of the road for the Zimbabwean as they will get to play in plate matches that will be used to determine the standings at the end of the tournament.
Ryan Gwidzima is the only player remaining in the next stage of the tournament as others will play plate matches.

Zimbabwe men’s team captain Malvin Mubure said his team tried their best even though only one player is remaining but is confident that they will fight on and produce better results in their next matches.

“They all really tried their best and we are looking forward that on their next matches they will fight and produce better results,” said Mubure.
The draw for the next round had not yet been known at the time of publication. — @brandon_malvin
