IMBUBE exponents Black Umfolosi say they relived memories of the Unity Accord when they first performed the hit track Unity after putting up a splendid performance at the historic unveiling of the late Joshua Nkomo’s statue, official opening of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport and the renaming of Main Street.

The world-travelled group is famed for the timeless track that was first performed after the signing of the Unity Accord on December 22 1987.

One of the group members, Tomick Dube said they were proud of their composition which has remained a hit.
“We are very glad to have come up with this uniting composition, which has remained relevant to Zimbabweans over the years. We have quite a collection of tracks but the track Unity has been the most outstanding from all our compositions,” said Dube.

He said his group felt honoured and indebted to the people of Zimbabwe after being given a platform to perform at the historic event.
At the unveiling of the statue, the group performed together with Mpumelelo Shining Stars and Family voices with the crowd singing along.

“Even up to today, we are still asking ourselves how we came up with those powerful words. As Black Umfolosi we are proud of our country and we have some former freedom fighters in the group and that has made us remain patriotic, otherwise we could have relocated to Europe during economic hardships but we love our country,” said Dube.

According to Dube, the late Dennis Nkomo who was part of the group came up with an idea to have a song that talked about peace after their invitation to the Unity Accord signing ceremony in 1987.

“While we were at Sheraton Hotel, the late Nkomo came up with an idea for the track Unity and we worked together adding more words to the song as well as finding a tune and the result was a hit track with Sotsha Moyo as the lead singer.”

Dube commended President Mugabe and the Government for honouring the late Dr Nkomo. Dr Nkomo was a champion of unity in this country and I think what we witnessed over the weekend is a befitting honour for a man who worked tirelessly for this country,” he said.

The veteran musician urged budding artistes to do a different version of the song with a feel for the younger generation.
