A BULAWAYO woman is battling for life at Mpilo Central Hospital after a 33-year-old neighbour broke into her shack while she was asleep and stabbed her on the breast and throat. Eddie Phiri of Ngozi Mine claimed after his arrest that he had been sent to take the blood of Evans Ndebele, 65, by unknown people. Witnesses said Phiri, armed with a knife stormed into Ndebele’s one roomed shack at around 2.30AM on Friday while she was asleep. He stabbed her while her two grandchildren, aged six and nine, watched in horror.

The two grandchildren dashed out of the room screaming for help and alerted their aunt, Sehluselo Ncube, 37, who lives next door.

Ncube said she was awakened by her nephews who told her that a man had invaded their room and stabbed their grandmother.

“My husband woke up and rushed to her room and found Phiri on top of her holding a knife.

“Phiri ran away armed with the blood-stained knife. My husband called out for me and when l came, I found my aunt writhing in pain and she couldn’t speak,” said Ncube.

Phiri was found hiding in a bush and apprehended at around 7.30AM by three residents of Ngozi Mine who handed him over to the police.
