THE Bob 90 Super Cup launch which was supposed to be held in Harare tomorrow has been postponed to February 12, organisers have confirmed.Charles Mabika, media liaison officer for the tournament meant to celebrate President Mugabe’s birthday, said the postponement was necessitated by administrative issues but assured the nation that preparations were going on smoothly.
“The official launch will now be on February 12 in the capital, we want to get everything in order for a grand launch befitting the status of the occasion. The organising committee is busy engaging with potential sponsors, deliberations of which are progressing smoothly,” said the veteran broadcaster.
Now in its fourth year, this year’s edition will feature three teams, holders Dynamos, 2012 losing finalists Highlanders and the Castle Lager Premiership 2013 second runner-up Harare City.
In its inaugural year, the tournament was won by Caps United with new boys then FC Platinum lifting it the following year after beating coalminers Hwange.
Last year league champions Dynamos mauled Highlanders 6-1 after a two-legged final, the first one played at Barbourfields Stadium that saw Dynamos winning 2-1 through goals by skipper Tawanda Muparati and Patrick Khumbula while Beavan Chikaka scored for Bosso.
A week later the two giants clashed in the second leg in Harare and Bosso were pummeled into submission as DeMbare went on a rampage and drilled four goals without reply past Ariel Sibanda.
For their efforts DeMbare collected $110, 000 while Bosso got $75, 000. According to the tournament’s format this year, Amahlolanyama will clash with Sunshine boys in the only semi-final at Barbourfields Stadium on February 16 with the winner setting a date with defending champions Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium a week later.
Highlanders players have already indicated their intentions of sweeping everything on offer this year in what they termed the “Bubi Declaration.”
Before the Bob 90 clash with Harare City, Highlanders will take part in the second edition of the Cephas George Msipa Scholarship Trust Charity football tournament set for the second weekend of February.
FC Platinum and Shabanie Mine took part in the inaugural tournament last year, but this year’s event has been extended to four teams with Chapungu and Highlanders to make their debut in the event.
Highlanders will play Premiership returnees Chapungu at Ascot Stadium on February 8 with the Zvishavane derby at Mandava Stadium on the same day. The winners of both matches will meet in the final at Mandava Stadium the following day.
