PREPARATIONS for this year’s edition of the Bob@90 Super Cup will gather momentum tomorrow when organisers of the pre-season football competition host a fundraising dinner in Harare. The Bob Super Cup is an invitational football tournament meant to celebrate the life of President Mugabe, who will be turning 90 on February 21.
A new format, the fourth in as many editions, was unveiled for this year, with defending champions Dynamos being given a bye in the earlier round.
Spokesperson for the organising committee Charles Mabika yesterday said the dinner dance was meant to officially kick-start football activities for this year.
“We are going to hold a dinner dance in the capital on Wednesday, February 12, and this is aimed at setting the stage alight for the opening match at Barbourfields at the weekend,” said Mabika. Bulawayo giants Highlanders will meet Harare City with the winners set to meet Dynamos on February 23 in Harare. Chairperson of the Bob Super Cup, Stan Kasukuwere, has indicated that Chicken Slice, Lobels and Nyaradzo Funeral Services are some of their partners in this year’s edition.
The Bob Super Cup’s inaugural edition was played when the President Mugabe turned 87 and besides football, other sporting disciplines like basketball, athletics and golf also host their own events.
