A MORNING prayer ritual turned into a nightmare after a woman discovered the body of an unidentified man near the Rusape Town Council waterworks last week.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, confirmed the incident, and identified the informant as Mercy Murambwa (48), of Vengere, Rusape.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the incident occurred on September 17, at about 9am when Murambwa went to pray at a shrine near the waterworks.
“While at the shrine, she proceeded to a nearby bush to fetch some firewood. She discovered the body of an unknown male adult lying on the ground,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
He said Murambwa informed Justice Chemusango (35), also of Vengere, who works at the waterworks. Chemusango reported the matter at ZRP Rusape Central Police Station. Police examined the body, which showed no visible signs of decomposition.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said police found items suspected to be linked to pesticide and rat poison near the body.
“They observed an empty container of pesticide poison, a sealed container and a sachet of rat poison beside the body. The circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain unclear, and police are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examination,” he said.
The body was taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for examination, Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said.
Police are appealing to members of the public who may have missing relatives or who may be able to identify the deceased to come forward.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said: “The unidentified body is currently being kept at Rusape General Hospital mortuary as police continue efforts to establish the man’s identity and notify his relatives. Anyone with information that may assist in identifying the deceased is urged to report to the nearest police station.”
Investigations are ongoing.
