THE body of a teenager, who was pregnant when she died and was buried at Madzibaba Ishmael’s shrine in Nyabira, has been exhumed.
Polite Kofi was buried on May 22, 2020.
She was 16, and expecting a baby, at the time of her death.
The burial was conducted by Madzibaba Ishmael and his followers without the involvement of relatives of the deceased.
Naume Zavare requested the exhumation of Polite’s body for reburial at Mavhura Village in Mudzi.
Armed police descended at Lily Farm yesterday and made sure the pathologist conducted the exhumation without the interference of media as well as the shrine’s residents.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the exhumation saying the body was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for postmortem.
“Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the burial of a girl aged 16 sometime in 2020 at a shrine in Nyabira,” said Insp Kohwero.
“Relatives of the deceased claim that the body was buried without their knowledge and requested the exhumation.
“The exhumed body was taken for a postmortem with a view to help police with their investigations,” he said.
The exhumation of Polite’s body is the third after that of Professor Muhwati and Hazel Chikurume, who were also believed to have been buried without the knowledge of their relatives.
A number of Madzibaba Ishmael’s followers have been packing and leaving the shrine.
This followed the arrest of Madzibaba Ishmael whose case is now before the courts of law.
Some of his die-hard followers were seen following proceedings from a distance as police monitored the exhumation of Polite’s body.
