Bogus magistrate denied bail

The man who allegedly also indecently assaulted the woman in question was not formally charged when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe who remanded him in custody to Friday this week for trial.
Prosecutor Mr Moffat Makuvatsine opposed bail arguing that Mazengwe was a flight risk.
Mazengwe is facing fraud charges, impersonating a public officer and indecent assault.
It is the State’s case that on February 2 this year the complainant met Mazengwe after being introduced to him by Mr Ruzvidzo as a Harare provincial magistrate.
The complainant got interested since she required assistance.
On February 3 this year, it is alleged, the complainant Sinodia Moyo met Mazengwe at Jameson Hotel where he produced an identity, purporting to be a magistrate and promised to help Moyo.
After the discussion, it is alleged, Moyo gave Mazengwe US$260, which was meant for fuel when carrying out investigations for her case.
Mazengwe, the State says, told Moyo that he had two Police Commissioners he wanted to involve in the case and needed some presents.
On February 6 Moyo phoned Mazengwe and he promised to meet her at the Harare Magistrate Court. The two later met and Mazengwe demanded US$100, which he said was for the services he had provided.
Mazengwe, it is alleged, had a present wrapped and lied that it was for the Police Commissioners who were assisting in the matter.
Moyo started to doubt Mazengwe’s credibility and she started avoiding him until on February 7 when he sent her a text message requesting to meet her at Jameson Hotel. Moyo reported the matter to police and a trap was set.
She went to Jameson Hotel where they met and Mazengwe demanded US$40, which he said was for groceries of the Police Commissioners.
He was arrested after receiving the trap money. Mazengwe is alleged to have indecently assaulted Ms Moyo on the day in question.
