A HARARE man has been accused of impersonating a public official and defrauding unsuspecting people.
Alpharomeo Mutovongi (50) was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi, who remanded him in custody to tomorrow, for bail application.
Prosecutor Zebedia Bofu said on January 9, Mutovongi introduced himself as a Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) official to Edmore Tsikayi.
Mutovongi told him that ZACC was hiring private vehicles at US$50 per day from Monday to Friday.
Tsikayi gave Mutovongi his Toyota Regius for hire after signing contract forms.
Mutovongi sold the car to Jesse Takavadii.
Tsikayi followed up to collect his “dues” and realised that he had been duped.
He tried to locate Mutovongi but to no avail, and reported the matter to police.
The car was recovered from Takavadii.
