DANCE outfit Bolamba Culture Birds have successfully broadened their artistic scope to include live music performances — a move that has already borne fruit, as evidenced by their recent victory in the Chibuku Road to Fame competition for Matabeleland South province.

The group is now set to represent the vibrant province at the national finals, scheduled for October 4.

Bolamba Culture Birds comprises a talented ensemble including founder and director Mthabisi Dube, alongside Mphokuhle Sibanda, Sinobuhle Dube, Thembelani Ndlovu, Preacher Dube, Mzobanzi Magutshwa, Pride Mthokozisi Bafana and Prince Marozwa.

Speaking on their recent success, Dube expressed that the group’s decision to diversify was a strategic move to showcase their wide-ranging talents.

“The group has been active since 2009, primarily focusing on dance. However, last year, I decided to explore live band performances as a way of expanding our artistic expression,” he said.

Dube revealed that their musical inspiration stems from the Botswana-based group Culture Spears, famed for their hit Kulenyane.

He described the transition from a dance-focused ensemble to a full band as a significant milestone.

“Becoming a band has opened new doors for us. We’re now able to represent Zimbabwe at various music and dance festivals. Managing a dance group comes with its own set of challenges, particularly financial ones. Shifting to a band setup has helped us overcome many of these hurdles, as we now perform across a wider range of platforms and events,” he explained.

Dube emphasised his belief in innovation and taking bold steps.

“I value uniqueness and diversity. I enjoy trying new things and I’m not afraid to take risks in life.”

Looking ahead, Dube said the group’s focus is on growth, with plans to produce new material and collaborate with established artistes.

“Our colour composition is deeply influenced by my identity and cultural heritage. We’re planning to record new music and pursue collaborations with renowned musicians. Winning the provincial competition means a great deal — it gives me hope and the motivation to keep pushing forward. Considering we’re relatively new to live band production, this achievement is truly a milestone. Our attention is now on preparing for the national finals.”

Dube also offered words of encouragement to aspiring artistes:

“My advice to upcoming artistes is to remain humble, stay focused and never give up. They must love what they do and do what they love.” —@mthabisi_mthire
