SOUTH Africa-based Bulawayo’s heavyweight pugilist Victor Elvis Moyo is racing against time to be fit for a non-title fight at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg later this month after picking an injury on Monday. Moyo is billed to fight an unnamed Democratic Republic of Congo boxer on 29 June.
In an interview from his Johannesburg base, Moyo said he would be out of the gym for the next two weeks and is racing against time to regain fitness for his June 29 bill.
“Right now I’m in pain and can’t even walk as I hurt my foot at the gym. My ankle is swollen and my medical team is assessing the gravity of the injury. My physician said I need at least two weeks for my injury to heal because I have a fight at the end of June,” said Moyo.
The four-rounder Gold Reef City fight is part of the two fights that his handlers are using as part of his preparations for his big game in September against Ben Marcell in Cape Town.
The Sizinda-born and former Tshaka Youth Centre boxer said his target was to be up and running by 20 June so that he has a week to get ready for the Gold Reef City fight.
“I cannot afford to miss my end of June fight because it has been hard for me to get opponents. I have to get into the ring so that I maintain shape ahead of my big fight set for September. After the Gold Reef City bill I will squeeze another fight either in July or August,” said Moyo.
Meanwhile, former Zimbabwe National Youth Games boxing champion Ntando Sibanda is scheduled to get his first fight in South Africa against Joshua Studdard on 29 June.
The pencil slim boxer, also a product of Tshaka Youth Centre has been training under trainer-cum-manager Gert Strydom who also handles heavyweight boxer Moyo, popularly known as “The Bulawayo Bomber”.
