Book Cafe hosts ‘Threesome Gig’

Diana Samkange (pictured), BaShupi and Pauline Gundidza will join forces at Book Cafe tomorrow in a show dubbed “Threesome Gig”.
The three, whose music is as diverse as their backgrounds, have set their sights on luring fans by giving people what they want.“A lot of people want to go to those places where they are assured of a thrilling act. So the idea of the ‘awesome threesome’ as we call it, sets the tone for what fans can expect,” Diana said.

She started off as lead vocalist for the urban grooves outfit  2BG but now the beauty is pursuing a solo career in which she has even changed her sound.

The “Kumazivandadzoka” hitmaker is now into afro-jazz and traditional music where she fuses mbira and Zimbabwean contemporary beats.

“This is not to say that urban grooves was bad, but it’s just that I have come to realise that my target audience is mature crowd and that means I have to make music that appeals to people who relate to my music,” she said.

Now basking in the newly found fame of her latest release “Kumazivandadzoka”, Diana is a marvel to watch whenever she takes to the stage.

He first solo project was “My First Diary” and the sophomore album “Magumo Erudo” which did rounds on Power FM. The accompanying video was beautifully done showing the softer side of Diana as a rising diva.

And now partnering Pauline, ex-Mafriq vocalist as well as BaShupi, the combination is a formidable one considering the fact that they use live bands.

Pauline, who was a novice in mbira, is now able to play the instrument with ease. She has been performing at private functions and holding shows at the Book Cafe where she’s slowly building a firm foundation.

Much of her music is based on life experiences as a singer and mother of two. Her sultry voice and huge stage presence are evident enough to show she belongs on the stage.

As for BaShupi he’s just a solid performer. You cannot pigeon-hole BaShupi’s sound into a particular genre because he appeals to a crossover audience.

He can dance, he can sing and entertain his audiences through a medley of songs some of which are in the public domain. Do you remember “Mai Mwana Muri Chocolate?”
