WHAT started as an ordinary morning turned into a Hollywood-style explosion when a Honda Fit was blown to bits at Mayenziwe Shopping Centre, thanks to a leaking gas cylinder that turned the compact car into a fireball!
Witnesses watched in horror (and whipped out their phones) as the modest ride exploded into flames, leaving nothing but a charred metal shell and scorched tarmac.
According to Bulawayo City Chief Fire Officer Mr Mhlangano Moyo, the blaze was triggered by a 48kg gas cylinder that was being transported inside the Honda Fit. The confined heat, plus a suspected leak, turned the vehicle into a rolling bomb.
“The car was carrying gas cylinders and one went up in flames. Luckily, no one was injured,” said Mr Moyo.
Still, the fiery aftermath left little to salvage, with onlookers saying the vehicle was “fried to the frame.”
Mr Moyo expressed frustration, saying the fire department recently held awareness campaigns, even appearing on Skies Metro radio, warning residents about unsafe gas handling.
“We’ve tried to educate the public, but there’s little buy-in,” he said grimly.
This incident is the latest in a string of fire disasters involving reckless gas storage and transport. As more residents turn to alternative fuels during power outages, authorities are urging strict caution and common sense.
