THE Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED) has availed road construction equipment to ease and fast-track road maintenance for rural and urban authorities in the Midlands Province.

The machine called the “Road Reclaimer” cuts out five processes and completes work that usually takes months in a few hours.

Addressing representatives from local authorities during a road reconstruction demonstration in Ascot suburb in Gweru, CMED managing director Engineer Davison Mhaka encouraged road authorities to make use of the Road Reclaimer in rehabilitating roads in their jurisdictions.

“CMED acquired this massive 30-tonne Caterpillar RM500 Road Reclaimer so that it can be used by all road authorities in the rehabilitation and construction of the national road network,” he said.

Eng Mhaka said they were ready to work with local authorities, adding that they were in the process of acquiring more road reconstruction equipment soon.

“I am pleased to inform you that we are in the process of acquiring more high-tech pieces of road construction equipment and very soon we will be taking delivery of an Asphalt paver, Front End Loaders and Graders,” he said.

“They will be available for hire to our road network, in line with our national vision… to be an upper middle economy by 2030. We are ready to work with all the local authorities in the hire of equipment, repairs and refurbishment of some of the equipment that is your workshops so that we increase the equipment available as we pursue our national vision.”

Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Larry Mavima said CMED was playing a pivotal role in national road rehabilitation.

In a speech read on his behalf by director in his office Mr Cleto Diwa, Minister Mavima appreciated the visionary insight that was demonstrated by CMED.

“CMED plays a pivotal role in the National Road Network Rehabilitation of roads by availing the Road Reclaimer,” he said. “Recently, CMED provided the Department State Roads in Mashonaland East with the Road Reclaimer.

“I am advised that they were able to reclaim a road measuring 10 kilometres within three days’ work that would ordinarily take about three months to complete when using the conventional equipment, but thanks to the Road Reclaimer, local authorities will be able to complete more roads in a shorter period of time.”
