The country’s health delivery sector has received a major booster following the delivery of a consignment of medical equipment worth over $1 million from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India.
The equipment will cover critical areas such as radiology, intensive care unit, renal units, paediatric care and maternity.
Addressing a post-Cabinet briefing at Munhumutapa Offices in Harare on Tuesday, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Honourable Monica Mutsvangwa said: “Cabinet received a report from the Ministry of Health and Childcare on delivery of hospital equipment that came from the United Arab Emirates and also from India.
“This positive development was a result of His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s re-engagement efforts with the international community where he extended an appeal for support on the revival of Zimbabwe’s health care delivery system.’
She added, “The UAE government has accordingly donated to the people of Zimbabwe the following hospital equipment: five dialysis machines, six vital sign monitors, eight respiratory aid devices, 12 neo-natal monitors and 12 paediatric machines.”
The equipment, which is estimated at around US$400 000, is earmarked for Harare Hospital.
She said a larger consignment is yet to follow from the UAE.
Further, the UAE has pledged to refurbish Harare Central Hospital.
Government has also received a consignment of equipment from India valued at US$650 000 that will be distributed across the country’s major central hospitals.
She added that a consignment of equipment valued at US$300 000 will arrive shortly and Government is paying for this equipment.
The Minister of Health and Childcare, Dr Obadiah Moyo, hailed the donations and said they will go a long way in alleviating challenges in the health sector.
