BOOZE KILL ME! Gweru grandpa dies after night of heavy drinking

A NIGHT of beer ended in tragedy for 78-year-old Sattulus Ncube, who allegedly died after a heavy drinking session in Gweru, police say.

Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed that Ncube’s body was discovered on the steps of his Section 7 Mtapa home on September 8.

Police say the retired man went to Mboma Bar, about 2km from his house, on 7 September for a drink. Around 8pm, his 40-year-old son reportedly joined him at the bar, bought him scuds, and handed him US$30.

By 10pm, Ncube was seen staggering along the road, visibly drunk and struggling to walk, Insp Mahoko said.

The following morning, neighbours found his lifeless body at his flat’s entrance. Police noted froth coming from his mouth and nose, suggesting complications from heavy alcohol consumption.

Investigations into the sudden death are ongoing.
