ZIFA Central Soccer League champions Border Strikers were presented with their shield and championship medals at Dulibadzimu Stadium on Saturday for winning the region’s sole Premier Soccer League promotional ticket.
The presentation marked the curtain coming down on CSL season, which Vavheneki capped by beating Blanket Mine 1-0 to end on 67 points.
CSL chairman Felton Kamambo implored the border town outfit to be ambassadors of the region in the topflight league.
“I want to congratulate you on your milestone achievement and as a region we’re proud of your success. I would want to urge you to be ambassadors of the region, which means we don’t want to promote teams that only spend a season in the Premiership and then are relegated after one season,” said Kamambo.
“We want you to hold your own in the topflight league to show that the CSL is competitive if not the best Division One League in the country.”
Except for FC Platinum and Chapungu, all other teams that were promoted from the region have been relegated after a season’s flirtation with the topflight.
Border Strikers chairman Jabulani Ndou said his club was in the PSL to stay.
Vavheneki becomes the third side from Beitbridge to be promoted to the Premiership following similar feats by Underhill in 2009 and Tripple B in 2013.
Both teams were relegated after just one season and are now defunct.
Meanwhile, Tongogara surrendered second spot to Shabanie Mine after being held to a 0-0 draw by FC Platinum Under-19 to finish the season on 53 points.
Shabanie Mine had three points in the bag as their final fixture of the season was against expelled Mvuma Stars and they finished the season on 55 points.
