NEWLY promoted Premier Soccer League club Border Strikers on Wednesday night honoured its outstanding players, who played a leading role in helping the side win the 2015 Central Soccer League championship.
Young forward Godfrey Mukambi was the toast of the night by bagging three accolades. He was named the Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year before sharing the Golden Boot with four teammates.
Other winners on the night included Polite Begedhe, who was voted the most disciplined player, while Michael Matambo bagged the season’s most consistent player.
The quartet of William Nyoni, Prince Sibanda David Tito and Tendai Mukambi joined Godfrey Mukambi on the podium for the Golden Boot award after each netted five goals in the just ended season.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Beitbridge Town Council secretary Loud Ramakgapola, who is also the Border Strikers’ patron, said there is need for the community to rally behind the club.
“Border Strikers is a community club and as such there is need for the community to be solidly behind this project. We have had teams that were owned by individuals and they folded. That model never works and there is need to support community initiatives such as Border Strikers, who have been around for 35 years,” said Ramakgapola.
“As council, we will continue to support the team and as part of our support, we will refurbish Dulibadzimu Stadium to ensure that the people of Beitbridge watch Premiership football next season,” he said.
The club’s board of trustees chairman Hosea Muleya outlined an ambitious project for Border Strikers that will culminate in Vavheneki owning assets, such as a club house.
“As Border Strikers, we have lined up several community projects that will ensure that the club is self-sufficient. We want to see the club owning assets and not relying on handouts. As such, we will want to see the club having its own team bus and a club house,” Muleya said.
The ceremony was attended by the local business community and football fans, who pledged their support for the project.
Vavheneki becomes the third club from the border town to be promoted into the topflight league after Underhill in 2009 and Tripple B in 2012 that have since folded.
