BORDER Strikers bounced back into contention for the Zifa Central Soccer League championship following a 5-0 massacre of Vumbachikwe at Dulibadzimu Stadium.
“Vavheneki” got their goals from double scorer Godfrey Mukambi, Munyaradzi Chirape, Prince Sibanda and David Tito.
The win saw Strikers storming into the top three with 18 points from nine games, just three points adrift of leaders ZPC Munyati, who edged ZRP Beitbridge 3-2 on Saturday.
Border Strikers mentor, Never Malunga described the win as timely adding that it would spur his side to produce better results.
“I’m happy with the win which has come as we seemed to be struggling to collect maximum points. Our target is to collect as many points as possible and we’ll see how it goes at the end of the season. For us getting promoted is not far-fetched,” said Malunga.
In other matches, Shabanie Mine continued to struggle away from home and were held to a goalless draw by a determined Gweru United at Ascot Stadium.
The game started 30 minutes late due to a clash of colours resulting in the Chinda Boys borrowing an alternative kit.
Erea Phiri had the best chance to seal the asbestos miners’ first set of maximum points away from home, but his effort ricocheted against the upright in a face-to-face situation with the Gweru United goalkeeper.
The result further dented Shabanie Mine’s championship aspirations as the gap between them and the leaders widened to seven points.
However, for Gweru United coach, Peter Manoti it was a positive result that contributes to their stay in the second tier league.
